Pastor Jimmy Odukoya, Senior Pastor of The Fountain of Life Church, has publicly addressed the reasons behind his distinctive dreadlocked hairstyle, attributing the decision directly to a spiritual instruction from God rather than personal preference or fashion.

His explanation came during a recent sermon shared via Facebook on Wednesday, April 9, 2025.

Addressing the mixed reactions his appearance has sometimes generated, Pastor Odukoya recounted seeking divine guidance before fully stepping into his leadership role. “Before I came back, one of the things I asked the Lord was whether or not I should cut my hair. And the Lord told me not to cut my hair,” he explained, adding he chose obedience despite potential questions.

He shared that even his sister, Associate Senior Pastor Tolu Odukoya-Ijogun, initially expressed reservations, using the analogy, “To clean a fish, you must first catch it,” implying the need for relatability to reach people. However, after Pastor Odukoya encouraged her to pray about it, she reportedly received her own confirmation.

“She saw me preaching with my hair and came back to say, ‘You’re not supposed to cut it.’ And I said, ‘I know. He already told me.’”

The core of Pastor Odukoya’s message revolved around a powerful testimony involving a woman from Zimbabwe. He recounted how this woman recently flew to Nigeria solely to attend his church. She shared with him a vision she experienced back in 2016 while in New York. In this vision, she saw a man with long hair (whom she didn’t recognize at the time) ministering powerfully with a sword, freeing her from a heavy burden represented by a dog.

Pastor Odukoya revealed the woman later endured severe hardship, including a painful divorce where she lost everything and the subsequent trauma of her mother dying in her arms, leading to deep depression and thoughts of ending her life in early 2025. While searching for solace on YouTube, she stumbled upon one of Pastor Odukoya’s sermons.

“She said, ‘…when I saw the man from the vision with a long hair preaching I screamed, ‘This is the man I saw. I didn’t know any pastor would have long hair. It’s him!'” Pastor Odukoya narrated her emotional reaction upon recognizing him.

Crucially, Pastor Odukoya highlighted a key detail for context: “Here’s what’s crazy, in 2016, I didn’t have dreads. At the time she had the vision, I didn’t have my hair.”

He interpreted this sequence of events as divine orchestration.

“The God who sees, hears and knows, knew at some point in February 2025, one of His children will have to see a man preaching,” he stated.

He concluded that had he disobeyed the instruction to keep his hair, the woman would not have recognized him from her vision when she encountered his sermon online during her darkest moment. “God was making me keep my hair to save a life,” Pastor Odukoya asserted.
