Michelle Obama Speaks on Divorce Rumors: ‘I’m Just Choosing Me’

Former U.S. First Lady Michelle Obama has firmly dismissed swirling rumors about trouble in her marriage to Barack Obama, clarifying that her recent absence from several public events is simply a matter of personal choice—not marital strife.

Speculation had gained traction online due to Michelle’s noticeable absence from events such as former President Donald Trump’s inauguration and the recent funeral of former President Jimmy Carter.

Many took her absence as a sign of a rift between her and her husband.

However, in a recent appearance on the Work in Progress podcast hosted by actress Sophia Bush, Michelle addressed the assumptions without directly referencing the events in question. She said she had reached a point in her life where she could finally prioritize her own schedule.

“I’m a grown woman who can make decisions for herself,” she said. “And yet, instead of understanding that, people immediately assume that my husband and I are divorcing.”

Michelle candidly acknowledged the pressure women often face to meet others’ expectations, even at the cost of their own well-being.

“We struggle with disappointing people. So much so that when I made a few personal choices this year, folks couldn’t accept that it was simply about me—they created their own narratives.”

She continued, “It couldn’t just be a woman deciding for herself, right? No, it had to mean a divorce was happening. That says more about how society sees women than anything else.”

Despite stepping back from certain ceremonial roles, Michelle emphasized that she remains deeply committed to her advocacy work.

“I’m still out there—giving speeches, leading projects, and supporting girls’ education. I care about these things deeply,” she said.

The Obamas, who marked their 32nd wedding anniversary last October, have often been seen as a model couple. In her bestselling memoir Becoming, Michelle spoke openly about the strain Barack’s political career placed on their relationship, offering rare insight into the complexities of life in the public eye.

Her latest comments are a reminder that even globally admired figures deserve the freedom to make personal decisions without facing speculation or judgment.
