Tackling Poverty, Unemployment Key to Nigeria’s Security Challenges, Says Adesina

Akinwumi Adesina, President of the African Development Bank (AfDB), has called for urgent action to address the rising poverty and youth unemployment levels in Nigeria’s rural areas, emphasizing that these issues are central to the country’s ongoing security challenges.

Speaking at a recent event, Adesina highlighted the crucial role economic development plays in restoring peace and stability to rural communities.

“Unless we address the structural issues of poverty and the high rate of youth unemployment, particularly in rural areas, we will not see any meaningful progress in resolving insecurity,” Adesina remarked.

He stressed that these socio-economic challenges often drive young people towards desperation, making them vulnerable to extremist influences.

Adesina’s comments come as the AfDB continues to push for initiatives that offer real economic opportunities in the country’s rural regions.

One such initiative is the establishment of Special Agro-Industrial Processing Zones (SAPZs), which are designed to create sustainable livelihoods for farmers and Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs).

By providing infrastructure, training, and access to markets, SAPZs aim to stimulate economic growth, alleviate poverty, and ultimately reduce insecurity by offering alternatives to crime and violence.

In his speech, Adesina expressed optimism that these zones would not only improve the livelihoods of rural populations but also bring hope to a region that has long struggled with underdevelopment and instability.

He emphasized that rebuilding rural economies could significantly contribute to national peace and security.

The call for investment in rural economic development echoes broader concerns within Nigeria about the need to diversify and strengthen the economy, particularly in agriculture and food security.

Adesina’s focus on empowering rural communities stands as a testament to his belief that economic growth is key to resolving some of the country’s most pressing issues.

As the conversation around poverty and unemployment continues, the success of initiatives like SAPZs will likely become a defining factor in Nigeria’s effort to ensure long-term stability and prosperity for its rural populations.
