Abia Nears Takeover of EEDC as Otti Confirms Advanced Talks

Abia State is making a bold move, Governor Alex Otti is preparing to take over the Umuahia ringed fence of the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC). His goal? To bring stable electricity to the remaining eight Local Government Areas not yet powered by Geometric Power.

He made this announcement during a reception held by Geometric Power on the 5th of May, 2025.

The event followed the commissioning and inspection of Aba Power’s new 2 x 15 MVA substation at Ogbor Hill, a project launched by former President Olusegun Obasanjo.

Governor Otti has instructed the state’s Commissioner for Power and Public Utilities to engage with Geometric Power on channeling its surplus electricity to the Umuahia zone.

He confirmed that all assessments are complete and the state’s offer would be presented today.

“Ordinarily, what would happen is for that excess power to be injected into the national grid, but then, with the deregulation, our discussion with Geometric Power is around wheeling that 80 or 88 megawatts or any excess power into Umuahia ring-fence. So, once we are in control, that excess power will go to Umuahia,” Gov. Otti stated.

Obasanjo, on his part, commended Otti’s leadership and hailed Aba as the heart of industrialization a city that deserves uninterrupted power.

He congratulated both Otti and Professor Nnaji, along with the people of Abia, on the milestone.

Professor Nnaji, Chairman and CEO of Geometric Power Group, described the Aba Integrated Power Project as a vision over a decade in the making.

He noted the project has consumed over $800 million and credited Obasanjo and Otti for their pivotal roles in making it a reality.
