The Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), in partnership with the Lagos State Government and other key agencies, has launched a three-day clean-up and sensitisation campaign across the Lagos port corridors.
In a statement released on Friday, May 16, the NPA said the operation, themed ‘NPA Security Clearance Operations 2025’, is aimed at clearing congestion, removing security threats, and improving environmental conditions around the ports.
“It aims to tackle the issues hindering smooth operations at the ports and pave the way for greater port efficiency,” the statement noted.
The clean-up covers all entry routes leading to the Tincan Island Complex, Lagos Port Complex, Kirikiri Lighter Terminals I and II, and surrounding port areas.
The statement explained that the exercise is focused on flushing out miscreants, removing shanties, kiosks, and obstructive containers that hinder traffic and endanger personnel, cargo, and vessels.
It added that the initiative complies with the International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) Code, developed by the International Maritime Organisation, to promote safety and security in port facilities worldwide.
Speaking during the launch of the operation, NPA Managing Director Abubakar Dantsoho, represented by the General Manager of Security, Anthony Edosomwan, highlighted the significance of the ports to national economic growth.
“The operations will not only improve the safety and security of the ports but also contribute to the economic growth of the nation,” Dantsoho said.

He stressed that access roads and the immediate environment of the ports are considered international corridors, and the NPA has a duty to ensure they are properly maintained.
“The congestion and delays caused by these issues have been a major hindrance to the efficient functioning of ports, affecting trade facilitation and ultimately, the nation’s Gross Domestic Product,” he added.
To prepare for the operation, Dantsoho said the NPA’s security division conducted public awareness campaigns to build support and cooperation from port users, traders, and nearby residents.
“This is a crucial step in gathering support and cooperation from all stakeholders, including port users, traders, and residents in the surrounding areas,” he stated.
He reiterated the NPA’s dedication to promoting environmental sustainability and maintaining safe and operational port zones.
“Indeed, the negative impact of pollution and encroachment on the ports cannot be ignored.
“This clean-up operation is not only beneficial to the ports’ operations but also to the surrounding communities and the environment as a whole,” Dantsoho added.
He concluded that the clean-up is part of broader efforts to resolve long-standing congestion challenges and move Nigeria’s ports toward a more efficient and sustainable future.
