Senate Confirms Kalu as South East Commissioner in NASC

The Nigerian Senate has officially confirmed the appointment of Nnanna Uzor Kalu as the Commissioner representing the South East in the National Assembly Service Commission (NASC), following a majority vote on the Senate floor.

Kalu’s confirmation comes after the Senate Committee on Establishment and Public Service, chaired by Senator Cyril Fasuyi, presented its report on the nominee.

According to Fasuyi, an earlier petition had caused the initial suspension of Kalu’s nomination, citing objections raised by members of the former NASC Board.

However, Senator Fasuyi noted that the concerns had since been addressed, following investigations by the Senate Committees on Code of Conduct and Public Petitions.

The committees found the petition to be without merit, clearing the path for Kalu’s appointment.

“The issues raised in the petition were thoroughly investigated and found to be unsubstantiated,” Fasuyi told lawmakers during plenary. “There is no legal or ethical barrier to his appointment.”

After deliberations, the Senate unanimously approved Kalu’s nomination.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio, in his remarks, urged the new Commissioner to discharge his responsibilities with a sense of justice, equity, and fidelity to the Nigerian Constitution.

Kalu, a seasoned politician and former two-term member of the House of Representatives, is also the younger brother of Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, who represents Abia North and previously served as Governor of Abia State.

His confirmation marks a significant step toward filling regional representation in the NASC, which plays a key role in the administration of the National Assembly workforce.
