Village Head, 13 Others Nabbed in Niger Over Alleged Banditry Ties

A village head and 13 individuals have been arrested by security operatives in connection with alleged collaboration with armed bandits in Mashegu Local Government Area of Niger State.

The suspects, including the village head of Guiwa, Garba Mohammed, were apprehended on May 23 during a joint clearance operation involving police officers, local hunters, and vigilantes in Guiwa and Telle communities.

Security analyst, Zagazola Makama, disclosed the arrests via his verified X account, noting that the operation targeted known bandit enclaves in the region.

The village head is accused of offering refuge and logistical aid to the bandits. Others arrested hail from surrounding communities including Wawa, Gwajibo, Telle, Dukku, Pallagi, Arera, Adogon Mallam, and Lumma.

Items recovered from the village head’s home include four motorcycles, a live cartridge, and ten cattle—three of which, found with severe injuries, were slaughtered on humane grounds.

Security officials say investigations are ongoing, emphasizing that the operation is part of sustained efforts to dismantle support systems aiding criminal groups in Niger State.
