Benue in Crisis: Lawyer Urges Tinubu to Act on Escalating Insecurity

Amid the growing wave of violence in Benue State, Barrister Aida Nath Ogwuche, a respected legal practitioner and advocate for justice, has written a powerful open letter to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, urging immediate and decisive intervention to end the bloodshed tearing through the state.

Her appeal comes in the wake of a brutal assault on Yelewata community in Guma Local Government Area, where more than 200 people were reportedly killed in a single attack.

Ogwuche expressed deep concern over the state’s rapid descent into chaos, warning that Benue, once known as the “Food Basket of the Nation,” is now marked by death, fear, and government silence. She said the unchecked attacks, widespread kidnappings, and general insecurity have devastated the local economy, disrupted farming activities, and driven residents into constant fear.

In her words, “The recent wave of violent attacks, kidnappings, and bloodshed has plunged our people into fear, crippling livelihoods and paralyzing the economy of a state largely sustained by farming.”

She called on the President to deploy more security personnel to the state, improve border surveillance through collaboration with neighbouring states, strengthen intelligence systems, and pursue long-term solutions that tackle the root causes of the unrest.

Ogwuche ended her message with a plea for swift federal action, emphasizing that “lives hang in the balance” and insisting that Benue people deserve safety, dignity, and peace.

Titled “Benue Is Bleeding,” the letter has sparked reactions across the country. Ogwuche’s passionate words have drawn attention to the worsening humanitarian crisis, especially in rural areas where farmlands have turned into graveyards and thousands have been displaced from their homes.
