Nasarawa Govt to Mining Firms: Act or Face Shutdown Over Neglect of Host Communities

The Nasarawa State Government has issued a stern warning to mining companies operating within the state, declaring that firms that neglect host communities or violate environmental regulations will face immediate closure.

Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Princess Margaret Itake Elayo, sounded the warning during an inspection tour of mining activities along the Uke River in Karu Local Government Area. The visit followed concerns over possible mercury contamination linked to illegal mining practices.

Elayo expressed alarm over reports alleging the use of mercury—a toxic chemical—in local mining operations and the improper disposal of hazardous waste into the Uke River, a vital water source for surrounding communities and wildlife.

“This river is life to many people and animals,” she said. “If harmful substances are truly being released into it, that is unacceptable. Profits cannot come at the cost of human health.”

To verify the claims, water samples were collected for laboratory analysis, while operators were summoned for questioning.

Elayo emphasized that the state government is committed to protecting both public health and the environment, warning that any company found violating safety or environmental standards will be shut down.

She also criticised many mining firms for failing to fulfil their corporate social responsibilities, noting the persistent underdevelopment of host communities despite years of mineral extraction.

“Mining companies must give back to the people who host them,” she said.

“It is not enough to extract resources and leave communities behind. Going forward, companies that do not meet their obligations will have their licenses reviewed or suspended.”

The inspection team later visited Saka, another community in Karu, where residents are battling severe gully erosion. The government pledged to assess the site and implement necessary interventions to prevent further environmental degradation.
