Just hours after the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari was confirmed, Nigeria was again plunged into mourning on Sunday, July 13, following the passing of Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, the Awujale and Paramount Ruler of Ijebuland. He died at the age of 91.
Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State announced the monarch’s death in a statement from Abeokuta.
“It is with profound sadness that I announce the passing of His Royal Majesty, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, the revered Awujale of Ijebuland.
“Oba Adetona joined his ancestors today, July 13, 2025, at the age of 91, leaving behind a remarkable legacy that has significantly shaped Ijebuland, Ogun State and Nigeria in general,” the governor said.
Abiodun acknowledged the day’s double tragedy, noting, “It is indeed double sadness that Oba Adetona joined his ancestors the same day that the former President, Muhammadu Buhari, died in the United Kingdom.”
Oba Adetona ascended the throne on 2 April 1960 at just 26 years old, making him one of Nigeria’s longest-reigning monarchs.
His 65-year reign saw Ijebuland evolve into a model of cultural preservation and community progress.

“Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona was a remarkable royal father… Throughout his reign, he was a beacon of unity, cultural preservation, and progressive development,” Abiodun said.
“As we mourn his passing, let us celebrate the extraordinary life of Oba Adetona and honour his contributions to our country.
“His wisdom, kindness, and unwavering commitment to the betterment of his people will forever be etched in our hearts,” Abiodun added.
President Bola Tinubu also mourned the Awujale’s death, describing him as “a towering natural ruler” who served with honour and vision.
“Oba Adetona was a voice of reason during national crises and used his position to promote unity and progress,” Tinubu said.
Born on 10 May 1934 into the Royal House of Anikinaiya, Oba Adetona became the 50th Awujale after completing his studies in Nigeria and the United Kingdom.
Oba Adetona remained a respected voice in national and traditional affairs, known for his blend of cultural depth and modern leadership.
His passing marks the end of a historic era for Ijebuland and Yorubaland.
