Ex-President Jonathan Pays Tribute to Buhari, Calls Him ‘Patriot Elder Statesman’

Former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of former President Muhammadu Buhari, describing it as a profound national loss. In a heartfelt message shared on his official Instagram account, Jonathan reflected on Buhari’s contributions to Nigeria’s development, leadership, and public service.

President Buhari, who died in London at the age of 82, is remembered by Jonathan as a “notable leader, patriot, and elder statesman” who diligently served Nigeria both as a military Head of State and as a democratically elected President.

“He will be remembered as a courageous leader, a disciplined officer, and a committed public servant who made considerable contributions toward the peace and progress of our dear nation,” Jonathan wrote.

Jonathan praised Buhari’s decency, integrity, and selflessness, saying that he was deeply admired across different sectors of Nigerian society for his exemplary leadership and sense of patriotism.

“He was selfless in his commitment to duty and served the country with character,” Jonathan added.

The former president emphasized the national significance of Buhari’s passing, stating, “Nigeria has lost one of its foremost leaders, and I have lost a respected colleague and elder.”

He expressed confidence that Buhari’s legacy will continue to inspire those who uphold sacrifice, perseverance, and devotion to national values.

On behalf of his family and the Goodluck Jonathan Foundation, Jonathan extended condolences to Buhari’s family, the people of Katsina State, and Nigerians at large. He concluded his message with a prayer, asking Allah to forgive Buhari’s shortcomings, accept his good deeds, and grant him eternal peace in Jannatul Firdaus.

The tribute from Jonathan joins a chorus of national mourning, as tributes continue to pour in from within and beyond Nigeria’s borders for the late former president.
