… says Buhari vanished during crises, empowered incompetent cabal

Presidential candidate and rights activist Omoyele Sowore has publicly criticized former President Olusegun Obasanjo for stating that Muhammadu Buhari “died when Nigeria needed him most.”
Sowore, in a scathing post on his X (formerly Twitter) account, questioned Obasanjo’s assertion and launched a blistering critique of Buhari’s leadership legacy.
In the post, Sowore asked, “What exactly did Nigeria need Muhammadu Buhari for at the point of his death in London? Nothing.”
He went on to describe Obasanjo’s tribute as “loose talk,” arguing that Buhari had already abdicated his responsibilities long before his passing.
Sowore, who contested in the 2023 presidential elections under the African Action Congress (AAC), accused the late president of disappearing during national crises and ceding power to what he described as “a cabal of third-rate, incompetent, and utterly useless cronies.”
“When Nigeria truly needed Muhammadu Buhari, he vanished,” Sowore said.

“He abandoned his responsibilities, disappeared during crises, and handed the country over to a cabal… who drove it straight into the ground.”
He also referenced former Head of State Abdulsalami Abubakar, noting that even Abubakar had expressed criticism of Buhari’s cabinet, which Sowore called “a disaster.”
The post reflects Sowore’s long-standing opposition to Buhari’s administration, which he frequently criticized for authoritarian tendencies, economic mismanagement, and lack of transparency.
While Obasanjo’s comment appeared intended as a statesman’s farewell, Sowore’s reaction underscores the deep divisions in how Buhari’s presidency is remembered—celebrated by some as a symbol of discipline and patriotism, and condemned by others as a period marked by regression and repression.
