The body of former President Muhammadu Buhari has departed London, United Kingdom, for Daura, Katsina State, ahead of a state burial scheduled to honour the late Nigerian leader.
Buhari, who died on Sunday, July 13, 2025, at the age of 82, had been undergoing medical treatment in the UK prior to his passing. His death has drawn a wave of tributes from leaders across Nigeria and the international community, with flags ordered at half-staff and multiple arms of government suspending official activities in his honour.
The late president’s remains are expected to arrive in Katsina later today, where final rites will be conducted in accordance with Islamic traditions. A high-level government delegation, led by Vice President Kashim Shettima, is accompanying the body back to Nigeria, as directed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Buhari, a former Military Head of State (1984–1985) and two-term civilian President (2015–2023), will be laid to rest in his hometown of Daura, where national and regional leaders, traditional rulers, and dignitaries are expected to pay their final respects.
Security has been heightened in Katsina State as preparations intensify for the solemn ceremony, which forms part of a week-long national mourning declared by the Presidency. The federal government has also declared Tuesday, July 15, a public holiday in Buhari’s honour.
