The United States government has reminded its citizens in Nigeria to resolve all visa-related issues before the 31st of July, 2025, to avoid heavy consequences.
The Nigerian government, through the Ministry of Interior, led by Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, recently introduced tougher sanctions for foreign nationals who overstay their visas.
These include a $15 daily fine and bans on re-entry into Nigeria for prolonged violations.
“US citizens currently in Nigeria who have overstayed their visa are strongly encouraged to fix their stay through the amnesty portal before July 31, 2025,” the US Embassy said in a statement on its website.

The embassy further warned that ignoring the directive could “result in significant financial penalties and long-term restrictions on re-entry to Nigeria.”
The Ministry began enforcing the new fine system on the 1st of May, 2025, but offered an amnesty period allowing affected individuals to regularise their status without penalties.
That window closes on the 31st of July, 2025.
