INEC Confirms 10 Fresh Political Party Applications, Total Now 144

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has disclosed that it has received 10 new letters of intent from groups seeking registration as political parties, bringing the total number of applications to 144.

In a press statement issued on Thursday, 24th July 2025, and signed by Sam Olumekun, INEC’s National Commissioner and Chairman, Information & Voter Education Committee, the Commission said it is still reviewing the submissions.

“Meanwhile, the Commission has received 10 more letters of intent from associations seeking registration as political parties, bringing the number so far to 144,” the statement read.

Olumekun explained that INEC is assessing all the letters of intent to determine which associations qualify to proceed to the next phase of registration.

“The Commission is evaluating all numerous letters of intent received so far to determine the associations that meet the requirements to proceed to the application stage. A report is expected at our next regular meeting,” he said.

He also announced that a dedicated registration portal, developed internally by INEC’s ICT team, has been approved for use.

“In our last press release, we assured Nigerians that we are finalising the necessary tests on the party registration portal designed and built in-house by our ICT officials.

“As is the case with all our IT innovations, the new portal has been demonstrated before the Commission and approved for deployment.”

To promote transparency, INEC has published the names, acronyms, logos, addresses, and interim leadership of the new associations on its website and other platforms.

“We will continue to update Nigerians on all our activities,” Olumekun added.
