Osun Chief Arrested for Forcing Thief to Drink Poison as Victim Survives

The Osun State Police Command has arrested a traditional chief, identified as Chief Ajibade, for allegedly forcing a young man suspected of stealing corn to ingest a poisonous substance.

The incident occurred in the Ireti Ayo area of Ilesa and has since sparked outrage among locals, following a viral video showing the disturbing scene.

According to police spokesperson, SP Abiodun Ojelabi, the suspect, 62-year-old Chief Ajibade, caught 25-year-old Ebenezer allegedly stealing two pieces of corn from his farm. In a fit of anger, the chief was said to have beaten Ebenezer and then compelled him to drink a substance believed to be poisonous.

In a viral video the suspect was seen brandishing a cutlass while forcing the young man, seated on the ground with corn beside him, to drink from a cup.

Though the victim initially resisted, he eventually drank the substance and was allowed to go.

Eyewitnesses said Ebenezer was swiftly taken to Wesley Guild Hospital in Ilesa by residents, where doctors successfully neutralised the effects of the poison and stabilised his condition.

However, tragedy struck when news of the incident reached Ebenezer’s father. Misinformed that his son had died from the poisoning, the father reportedly collapsed and died from shock.

Confirming the development, Ojelabi stated:

“The suspect, Chief Ajibade, has been arrested in Ipetu Ijesa and moved to our command headquarters in Osogbo. The young man, Ebenezer, is alive and currently receiving medical attention. Unfortunately, the victim’s father died upon hearing false information that his son had died.”

The police have urged residents to remain calm as investigations continue.

The case has drawn widespread condemnation, with many calling for justice and highlighting the dangers of jungle justice and misinformation.
