The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) says it has received 151 letters from groups seeking to register as political parties, with eight new applications submitted since July 23.
INEC National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Sam Olumekun, disclosed this in a statement on Thursday, August 7.
“Since the 4th update released on 23rd July 2025, the commission has received eight more letters of intent from associations seeking registration as political parties. This brings the number received so far to 151,” he said.
He added, “Details of the latest requests, indicating their proposed names, acronyms, logos, addresses and interim leadership of the associations, are uploaded to our website and other online platforms for public information.”
According to Olumekun, the commission has now begun reviewing the submissions to shortlist associations that meet the criteria for registration.
“Meanwhile, having created the portal for party registration, the commission has commenced the shortlisting of the associations that meet the requirements to proceed to the application stage.
“Details will be released immediately after the 16 bye-elections in 12 states scheduled for Saturday, 16th August 2025,” he stated.
INEC also announced that the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise will resume nationwide, with the online pre-registration starting on August 18 and in-person registration beginning on August 25.

“As earlier announced by the commission, the CVR will resume on 18th August with the online pre-registration. The in-person registration option will follow a week later on 25th August 2025.
“Thereafter, the two processes will continue simultaneously for a year until 30th August 2026,” the statement said.
Registration will take place at 811 centres across the country from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday to Friday, excluding public holidays.
“For easy identification, the Commission is deploying an online CVR Live Locator to assist citizens locate the registration centres nationwide.
“The locator will go live a day to the commencement of the CVR on 17th August 2025 and can be accessed at the following address https://cvr.inecnigeria.org/locator,” Olumekun added.
A 38-page document containing addresses of all registration centres has also been uploaded to INEC’s website, along with state-specific telephone helplines for support.
“Similarly, dedicated telephone numbers have been given for each State of the Federation to serve as Help Desk for citizens who require further clarification,” he said.
He added that the registration procedures remain unchanged from the 2022 exercise and that updated video guides and details will be released next week.
