In a major boost for urban commuters, the Lagos Rail Mass Transit (LRMT) Blue Line has announced a tighter train schedule set to begin Monday, August 11, promising quicker trips and more efficient service.
The new timetable, unveiled in a statement by Kolawole Ojelabi, Head of Corporate Communication at the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA), will see Blue Line trains running every 10 minutes during peak hours — a move expected to cut journey time by eight minutes and deliver a 44% time savings for thousands of daily passengers.
As part of the service upgrade:
Weekday trips will increase from 72 to 90
Sunday trips will remain at 22
Four train sets will operate during peak periods, while two trains will handle off-peak traffic
The shift is enabled by newly acquired rolling stock, part of investments made by the Lagos State Government with backing from the Federal Government.
“We are excited to facilitate the increase in the number of trips,” said LAMATA Managing Director Abimbola Akinajo, noting the agency’s ongoing commitment to delivering “a world-class, sustainable transport system.”

Akinajo added that this enhancement is a precursor to full operations of the Blue Line corridor, which will eventually stretch to Okokomaiko once construction is complete by late 2026.
Since it launched commercial operations on September 4, 2023, the Blue Line has moved over 5 million passengers, according to LAMATA — a sign of both rising demand and the critical need for reliable mass transit in the bustling metropolis.
The second phase of the project is under active construction and expected to wrap up by the end of 2026, with passenger services extending further in early 2027.
This development marks another milestone in Lagos State’s transportation transformation, as authorities race to keep pace with the city’s rapid growth and mobility needs.
