Lagos Authorities Seal Ijora Property Over Raw Sewage Discharge

The Lagos State Wastewater Management Office (LSWMO) has shut down a commercial property at No. 229, Moshood Abiola Way, Ijora, after uncovering that it was channeling untreated sewage directly into public drains.

The enforcement action, carried out on Wednesday, follows an environmental probe that linked the property’s waste disposal practices to worsening pollution in the area.

Officials say the discharge was not only degrading the environment but also endangering public health.

Tokunbo Wahab, Lagos State Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, confirmed the closure via his official X account, calling the incident a blatant breach of the state’s sanitation laws.

“The indiscriminate discharge of raw sewage into public drains is not only harmful to the environment but also dangerous to public health,” Wahab stated.

The commissioner appealed to Lagos residents to adopt proper wastewater management systems and uphold hygiene standards, emphasizing that environmental negligence will face strict consequences — including heavy fines and possible prosecution.

Wahab further assured the public that the government is intensifying its crackdown on environmental offenders to safeguard water resources and maintain urban cleanliness.

The LSWMO reiterated its commitment to environmental sustainability, warning that similar acts of pollution will meet with immediate enforcement actions.
