Reekado Banks: I Quit Mavin Records Too Soon

Reekado Banks has opened up about his decision to leave Mavin Records, admitting that the move came earlier than it should have.

The award-winning singer, who gained recognition after joining the Don Jazzy-led label and clinching Rookie of the Year at The Headies in 2014 before bagging the highly debated Next Rated award in 2015, parted ways with the label in 2018. Following his exit, he set up his own outfit, Banks Music.

In a recent sit-down with reality star, Teddy A, on the Echoo Room, Banks reflected on the move and why he now believes it was premature.

According to him, the realisation hit when he had to navigate the business side of music without the backing of his former label.

The father of one, was quick to stress that his exit wasn’t fuelled by a fallout. Instead, he explained that his contract had already run out long before he decided not to renew.

“It (my exit from Mavin Records) wasn’t a conflict situation. I was pretty young and pretty fixated on what I wanted to do – I wanted to leave. Anyways, my contract has ended two years prior. I signed a three-year contract and I allowed it to ride for another two years. So, I was there for five years without reviewing the contract.

“So, when it was time, I thought I wanted to do this [leave] now. I thought I could do it now. I just embarked on the journey, as many people would view it, prematurely.

“As soon as I jumped into the sea as well, I realised how premature it was,” he admitted.
