Lagos APC Slams Obasanjo as “Bitter, Irrelevant” over Tinubu Criticisms

The Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress has pushed back against former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s claim that President Bola Tinubu’s government is competing with the late Muhammadu Buhari’s administration in incompetence.

In his recently released book, Nigeria: Past and Future, Obasanjo reviewed the country’s post-independence leaders and wrote that Buhari’s tenure was “the worst civil administration regime” in Nigeria’s history, adding that Tinubu’s leadership “seems to be competing with Buhari’s for now.”

Responding in a statement on Tuesday, August 26, Lagos APC spokesperson Seye Oladejo described the remark as “laughable and disgracefully hypocritical.”

“It is ironic that a man whose own time in office is remembered more for political arrogance, squandered opportunities, and failed democratic subversion would have the audacity to label anyone incompetent,” the statement read.

The party defended Tinubu’s record, pointing to his reforms, including the removal of fuel subsidies, foreign exchange restructuring, and efforts to address systemic inefficiencies.

“These are not marks of incompetence—they are bold actions by a man ready to fix what others, including Obasanjo, either broke or ignored,” it said.

The APC also accused the former president of being resentful and bitter.

“Obasanjo’s bitterness is well-known. He cannot control this government, and he resents that Nigeria has moved on from his brand of egocentric, do-or-die politics.

“His habit of attacking sitting presidents when he no longer holds relevance has become predictable and pathetic,” Oladejo stated.

The party further criticised Obasanjo’s record in office, citing the failed third-term agenda, unfulfilled power sector spending, rising foreign debt, and entrenched corruption.

“We strongly advise the former president to show some decorum, especially at his age. Elders are expected to advise, not agitate.

“If he has nothing constructive to say, silence would serve him—and the country—far better than these attention-seeking outbursts,” the statement said.

Concluding, the Lagos APC insisted that Tinubu was focused on Nigeria’s renewal.

“President Tinubu is not in a race with Obasanjo or anyone else. He is focused on reform, recovery, and renewal—and no amount of potshots from yesterday’s bitter men will derail that journey,” the party added.
