2027: Momodu Cautions Against Zoning, Says It Weakens Opposition Chances

Former presidential aspirant Dele Momodu has urged political parties to abandon zoning arrangements, warning that such practices only strengthen President Bola Tinubu’s chances in 2027.

In an interview on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily on Monday, September 8, Momodu said zoning was neither constitutional nor democratic. He described it as a political weapon used to cripple opposition parties.

“There is nothing in the Nigerian Constitution that stops anyone, whether you are a northerner or a southerner, from contesting,” he said.

According to him, zoning has been turned into a strategy to hand Tinubu an easy path to re-election.

“This so-called sentiment is a result and reward of blackmail from some people who want to deliberately keep all other parties down.

“Because they know that if you zone all other parties to the South in the presidency, none of them will be able to beat Asiwaju (President Bola Tinubu),” Momodu added.

The publisher-turned-politician also lamented the state of the PDP, a party he once sought to lead.

He claimed it had been compromised by those he described as “agents of the ruling party.”

“PDP has been completely hijacked by agents of the ruling party who insist on staying in PDP while working for APC. PDP is at a dead end,” he said, likening the opposition party to a “cadaver room” kept alive artificially by internal saboteurs.

Momodu, now with the African Democratic Congress (ADC), also dismissed reports that the party had promised its 2027 ticket to Atiku Abubakar.

“I don’t think ADC has promised to give an automatic ticket to anyone, including Atiku Abubakar. He is not the sole candidate of ADC,” he clarified.

His comments come as the PDP National Executive Council recently zoned its presidential ticket to the South, a move critics warn could further weaken the party’s chances.
