2027: PDP Zoning South Makes Tinubu’s Victory Easier — Dele Momodu

Journalist and politician, Dele Momodu, has sounded a strong warning to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), cautioning that zoning its 2027 presidential ticket to the South would be a costly mistake that could cement President Bola Tinubu’s grip on power.

Speaking on News Central on Thursday, August 28, Momodu did not mince words.

“Once you limit and restrict the presidential election to the South, nobody… it’s as good as giving it to Asiwaju on a platter, because Asiwaju has the South on lockdown.

“He has the structures, he has the resources, he has the incumbency, and he has the goodwill of many people in the South.”

According to him, such a move would not only weaken the PDP but also strengthen Tinubu’s re-election chances.

“They are not thinking about the broader implications. They are just thinking about their own internal politics. But they need to understand that this decision could have far-reaching consequences,” he said.

Momodu stressed that while the North has several strong challengers, the South offers Tinubu an unrivalled advantage.

“In the South, who is there to challenge him? Nobody. Nobody can match his influence in the South. So, this zoning decision is a mistake. And I think the PDP needs to rethink it. Because if they don’t, they will regret it.”

He warned that PDP’s decision could cost Nigeria dearly if the party continues to weaken itself.

“My advice to the PDP is to reconsider this decision because it’s not in their best interest and it’s certainly not in the best interest of Nigeria.

“We need a strong opposition to keep the government in check and if the PDP weakens itself, then who will do that?”

Momodu concluded by urging the party to think beyond narrow politics.

“I hope they listen to this advice because it’s coming from someone who cares about this country and who wants to see it move forward.”
