Wanted Terrorist Frees Hostages After Striking Peace Deal With Katsina Locals

Controversy is brewing in Katsina State after notorious bandit leader, Isiya Akwashi Garwa, long wanted by the Defence Headquarters, released dozens of abductees in Faskari Local Government Area, following a peace deal he reportedly struck with local authorities.

Conflict journalist Bakatsine broke the news on Wednesday in a post on X, revealing that Garwa handed over many kidnapped villagers from Mairua, Kanon-haki and Yar Dabaru communities without ransom payments.

The release comes days after reports emerged that Garwa, who has been linked to killings, kidnappings and cross-border raids, accepted a peace pact in Faskari, Katsina State.

Counter-insurgency expert Zagazola Makama confirmed that the bandit leader resurfaced in Hayin Gada community, presenting himself as an “advocate of dialogue” after years of terrorizing rural communities.

“Despite his bloody record, Garwa’s recent posture signals a possible shift in approach, as local leaders and security stakeholders weigh the implications of his acceptance of peace terms,” Makama noted.

The development has sharply divided opinion. Supporters of the peace accord say Garwa’s cooperation could bring respite to violence-ridden communities, while critics warn that treating a wanted terrorist as a negotiating partner risks legitimizing impunity.

For now, the families of the freed captives are breathing a sigh of relief. But the larger question remains: has Katsina traded justice for a fragile peace with one of its most feared warlords?
