European-American University has disowned a convocation ceremony held at NICON Luxury Hotel in Abuja where popular Hausa singer, Dauda Kahutu Rarara, was announced as a recipient of an honorary doctorate, describing the exercise as fraudulent.
The university, in a disclaimer published on its official website on Saturday, September 20, stated that it did not authorise or organise the event and had not conferred honorary degrees on Rarara or any of the other individuals listed as awardees.
Those named at the Abuja ceremony included Alhaji Ahmed Saleh Jnr., Mustapha Abdullahi Bujawa, and Tarela Boroh.
The institution stressed that none of them had been honoured by the university.
According to the statement, individuals who claimed to be its representatives in Nigeria including Musari Audu Isyaku, who styled himself as the university’s Northern Nigeria representative, and Idris Aliyu, who was introduced as a governing council member had no authority to act on its behalf.
The university explained that it does not operate a governing council and confirmed that Aliyu’s fellowship, awarded in 2024, had already been revoked for misconduct.

The institution also clarified that its current Vice Chancellor is Professor Luca Scotto di Tella de’ Douglas di Castel di Ripa, and not Dr. Josephine Egbuta, a former official who was dismissed earlier this year.
It further emphasised that it is duly registered in France as a nonprofit private higher education institution and holds a Royal Charter of Incorporation from the Kingdom of Bunyoro-Kitara in Uganda.
It dismissed as false claims that it is affiliated with Dominica or Panama.
The university described the Abuja convocation as a deliberate attempt to mislead the public and announced plans to petition Nigerian authorities to investigate and prosecute those behind the event.
