In a shocking turn of events that has sent ripples through the academic community, a senior lecturer at Kogi State University, Anyigba, Dr. Olabode Abimbola Ibikunle, has died under controversial circumstances during a hotel encounter with a 22-year-old student of the same institution.
The incident, which occurred on Tuesday, July 15, has sparked outrage and renewed conversations about power dynamics and sexual exploitation in Nigerian universities.
According to police sources, Dr. Ibikunle, who lectured in the Faculty of Education and was reportedly known for his harsh grading policies and alleged history of sexual coercion, checked into a hotel with a 200-level student identified as Gloria Samuel.
The young woman, a student of Social Studies Education, was said to have alerted hotel staff after the lecturer collapsed during their encounter.
Multiple sources told journalists that Dr. Ibikunle had allegedly consumed a combination of energy drinks prior to the meeting.
He reportedly slumped while still in the hotel room, prompting staff to rush him to a nearby hospital. He was pronounced dead on arrival.
The Kogi State Police Command confirmed the incident on Friday. Speaking with reporters, Police Public Relations Officer SP William Ovye Aya said the case was first reported by the hotel manager, Moses Friday, who stated that the student had rushed to the reception in distress.

“The DPO at Anyigba Division responded immediately and the lecturer was conveyed to the hospital, where he was unfortunately confirmed dead by a doctor,” Aya said.
The student involved has since been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Lokoja for further investigation.
Aya added that an autopsy had been conducted, though the results have not yet been made public.
Dr. Ibikunle was a married man with children. His sudden death under such controversial circumstances has drawn mixed reactions on campus and online, with some expressing shock and sorrow, while others call it a cautionary tale about abuse of authority in academic spaces.
