Jonathan Hails Malawi’s President Chakwera for Conceding Election Defeat

Former Nigerian President, Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, has praised Malawi’s President Lazarus Chakwera for conceding defeat in the country’s presidential election.

On Wednesday, Chakwera announced that he had called Professor Peter Mutharika, who emerged winner of the election, to congratulate him.

He conceded defeat even before the electoral authority released the final results.

Reacting on Thursday, September 25, in a statement on his Facebook page, Jonathan commended Chakwera “for his sportsmanship”.

He also congratulated the President-elect, describing the election as peaceful and a beacon of hope for Africa.

“As Africans, our democracy endures when those we choose lead with integrity, humility, and respect for institutional processes.

“May this moment in Malawi inspire other nations to uphold the sanctity of the vote, to accept outcomes gracefully, and to always put the interests of the people above political ambition.

“Malawi’s example today is a beacon of hope and a lesson in democratic maturity for all of us,” he added.
