Former President Goodluck Jonathan has opened up about his 2015 election loss, saying betrayal within his political circle played a major role in his defeat.
Jonathan, who contested for a second term under the Peoples Democratic Party, lost to Muhammadu Buhari of the then newly formed All Progressives Congress.
Even before the Independent National Electoral Commission finished announcing the results, he famously called Buhari to concede, later explaining that he acted to prevent bloodshed in the country.
Reflecting on that period on Thursday, September 4, during the 70th birthday celebration of former Edo State Deputy Governor, Chief Mike Ogiadomhe, Jonathan described Ogiadomhe as one of the few who remained loyal after he left office.

“I became President, then post-Presidency, one of the few friends who would give up their necks for me is Mike. You know politics in the Nigerian standard is about betrayals,” Jonathan said.
He added, “You find it difficult to see somebody who will say the same thing in the morning and in the evening.
“I’ve witnessed a lot of betrayals, especially in my 2015 elections, and Mike is somebody who would take a bullet on my behalf. He is somebody that you can take his word to the bank, but most other politicians, you cannot.”
