Lionel Messi signed off in style in what could be his last home appearance with Argentina’s national team, scoring twice as the world champions defeated Venezuela 3-0 in a South American World Cup qualifier.
The 37-year-old captain opened the scoring in the 31st minute, calmly finishing to give the Albiceleste the lead before Lautaro Martínez doubled the advantage in the 72nd minute.
Messi then sealed the victory with his second goal of the night in the 80th minute, sending fans at the Estadio Monumental into raptures.
After the match, Messi confirmed he will not be part of Argentina’s next qualifier against Ecuador, citing the need to rest.

“I have talked with Scaloni and we decided that I should rest and not travel against Ecuador,” Messi said. “As I just told you, I’m coming off an injury. Even though I’m already fine, we preferred to avoid me traveling and having to play another match.”
The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner added that his focus is on recovery and preparation for upcoming challenges: “I need to rest well and prepare properly for what’s coming.”
Argentina remain unbeaten in the qualifiers, with Messi once again proving decisive on the pitch—even as he steps aside for the next test.
