Nationwide Blackout Averted as Electricity Workers Suspend Strike

The National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE) has suspended its strike at the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) following a high-level intervention by the Federal Government.

The decision came after an emergency meeting held in Abuja on Thursday, September 25, 2025, involving the Ministry of Power, Ministry of Labour, NUEE, the Senior Staff Association of Electricity and Allied Companies (SSAEAC), the management of TCN, and the National Independent System Operator (NISO).

At the end of the meeting, all parties signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) outlining steps to resolve the workers’ grievances.

According to the agreement, the unions are expected to review the report of a standing committee on workers’ welfare between October 6 and October 7, 2025, after which implementation of the committee’s recommendations will commence.

The MoU also mandates TCN and NISO to assess the financial implications of the report and prepare an implementation plan to be presented to the Minister of Power and union leadership.

In addition, the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) is to fast-track tariff reviews for TCN and NISO to enable the execution of the agreement.

A key provision of the deal is a non-victimisation clause, ensuring that no worker will be penalised for participating in the industrial action.

Union leaders stressed that the strike was only suspended, pending full compliance with the terms of the agreement.

Further meetings are expected to address unresolved issues.

The suspension of the strike averted a nationwide blackout, which had threatened to cripple economic activities across the country
