EEDC Customers Storm Umuahia Streets Over 400% Electricity Bill Hike

Residents of the World Bank Housing Estate in Umuahia, on Thursday, the 14th of August, 2025, marched to the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) office, protesting what they described as a “400% hike in electricity bills.”

Carrying placards, the angry residents complained that their estimated bills had jumped sharply from N8,000 to N47,000 per household.

They said several written complaints about what they called “exploitative and unimaginable” charges were ignored by EEDC, adding that instead of addressing the issue, officials were threatening disconnection.

Addressing the crowd, the acting Chairperson of the World Bank Housing Estate Residents Association, Kalu Florence, demanded an immediate downward review.

She questioned how a public servant earning less than N80,000 monthly could care for a family if the “crazy bills” were not reversed.

Other residents urged the company not to cut them off, warning that the community might be pushed into taking actions “that may not be palatable.”

Responding, the Operations Manager, identified as Engineer Amaga, appealed for dialogue and later held a closed-door meeting with the residents’ representatives.

The peace talks lasted over three hours but ended without a resolution for the dissatisfied customers.
