A petrol tanker exploded on the Abeokuta–Sagamu Expressway in the early hours of Friday, October 3, 2025, leaving several people feared dead and destroying vehicles and infrastructure.
Spokesperson for the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE), Babatunde Akinbiyi, confirmed that the crash happened at about 1:00 a.m. near the Abeokuta–Kobape–Siun–Sagamu interchange.
He explained that the 33,000-litre tanker lost control, overturned, and spilled its contents across the road.
The fuel ignited, sparking a fire that consumed nearby vehicles, including a truck and a tow vehicle, while also damaging power installations that cut electricity supply in parts of Mowe and adjoining communities.
Emergency teams from TRACE, the Ogun State Fire Service, Nestlé PLC Fire Service, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), the Police, and other agencies were deployed to the scene.
Firefighters battled the blaze, while officials worked to decant remaining fuel and secure the area.
Authorities have not confirmed the casualty figure, but eyewitnesses reported fatalities.
Rescue operations and traffic diversions remained in place as of Friday morning.
