The Delta State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to the prudent use of resources in delivering durable, high-quality road infrastructure across the state, with the ongoing Ugbolu–Okpanam Road project standing as a major example of that vision.
Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, speaking on Thursday during the project’s unveiling, emphasized that the initiative aligns with Goals 9 and 11 of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which promote resilient infrastructure, sustainable cities, and inclusive industrialization.
According to the governor, road development remains a critical driver of socio-economic progress, facilitating trade, improving market access, attracting investments, and creating employment opportunities while also helping to reduce poverty.
“This project will link Ugbolu and Okpanam communities, enhance connectivity between Ibusa and Akwukwu-Igbo through the newly commissioned Ibusa–Okpanam Road, and ease traffic congestion in Asaba,” Oborevwori said.
The governor noted that the ₦21.3 billion contract has received a 40 percent advance payment amounting to ₦8.52 billion, adding that the project would feature an 8.0-metre-wide asphalt pavement, 1.5-metre hard shoulders on both sides, and over 27,000 metres of reinforced concrete drains with stormwater channels.
He explained that the road would not only boost agricultural productivity but also help curb crime and enhance socio-economic activities across Oshimili North Local Government Area.

Oborevwori further assured that his administration would not entertain contract variations or upward reviews, stressing the importance of fiscal discipline and timely execution.
“As of today, my administration is not owing any contractor, whether for inherited or newly awarded projects. We have maintained prompt payment within five working days of certification to encourage timely completion,” he stated.
The governor also urged Levant Construction Company, the contractor handling the project, to sustain its record of excellence and deliver the project as scheduled, assuring Deltans that his government remains steadfast in its “MORE Agenda” — prioritizing meaningful development and effective governance.
