The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, on Thursday flagged off the Light Up Abuja Project: Lots I & II, a major initiative to modernise street lighting across key districts of the nation’s capital.
The project, according to the FCT Administration, will deploy hybrid solar-powered streetlights to cover major areas including Maitama, Central Area, Wuse, Asokoro, and the Airport Expressway under Lot 1, while Lot 2 will extend to Katampe, Jabi, Garki, Gudu, Mabushi, and Katampe Extension.
Each streetlight will feature 300W Zolar-powered fittings with luminous flux between 7,500lm and 17,500lm, alongside surveillance modules connected to a central control room to monitor activities and curb vandalism.
Existing facilities will also be retrofitted, while damaged poles will be replaced with galvanized structures.

Officials say the project, set for completion within six months, will improve urban safety, enhance night-time visibility, and cut reliance on the national grid.
“This is a major step towards sustainable urban lighting and improved security in the capital,” the FCTA said in a statement.
