The Rivers State Waste Management Agency (RIWAMA) has suspended the mandatory monthly sanitation exercise earlier scheduled to begin on the first Saturday of every month.
The cancellation followed a directive from Governor Siminalayi Fubara during a meeting with the agency’s leadership at Government House, Port Harcourt.
RIWAMA Board Chairman, Dr. Samuel Nwanosike, confirmed the decision on Thursday, explaining that the governor preferred a new approach to waste management.
“The proposed environmental sanitation exercise that was supposed to hold on the 4th of October is hereby put off until further notice. The governor wants a different approach — to put a human face to waste management and ensure that the people see results,” Nwanosike said.

He added that the new strategy would focus on tackling indiscriminate refuse disposal, unblocking drains, and expanding capacity with new dumpsites and infrastructure.
According to him, Governor Fubara has assured full government support to strengthen RIWAMA’s operations, with the goal of keeping the state clean and safeguarding public health.
