The Lagos State Government has clarified the circumstances surrounding the recent arrest of an individual in the Admiralty area of Lekki Phase 1 by officials of the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC/KAI) for engaging in unauthorized activities on public infrastructure.
In a statement issued by the Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources and shared via the X handle of Commissioner Tokunbo Wahab on Friday, the government explained that the individual had been conducting charitable cooking activities on a road median, an action that contravenes environmental and sanitation regulations.
While commending the spirit of philanthropy demonstrated, the ministry emphasized that such initiatives must adhere to existing environmental laws to ensure public safety, environmental protection, and urban order.
“The administration of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu remains committed to fostering a clean, sustainable, and livable Lagos for all. Unauthorized use of public spaces, such as road medians, for commercial or personal activities poses significant risks, including damage to infrastructure, health hazards, and disruption to traffic flow,” the statement read.

It added that the enforcement action which involved the arrest and removal of equipment formed part of the #KeepLagosClean and #ZeroToleranceLagos campaigns aimed at maintaining the city’s environmental and aesthetic integrity.
The government urged residents to obtain necessary approvals before organizing public or charitable activities and to partner with relevant state agencies for guidance on compliance.
“Collaborative efforts with the appropriate authorities will help amplify the impact of goodwill while safeguarding our shared urban spaces,” the statement concluded.
