The Senate has passed a proposal for the creation of the Nigeria Mines Rangers Service, a new security body aimed at curbing illegal mining and boosting safety in mining zones nationwide.
This followed the presentation of a report by the Senate Committee on Solid Minerals, led by Senator Ekong Samson, during Tuesday’s sitting.
While presenting the report, Senator Samson explained that the service would be responsible for monitoring mining operations, enforcing environmental standards, and ensuring compliance with safety regulations.
Sponsored by Senator Mohammed Ogoshi Onawo, the proposed law is designed to safeguard mining environments, protect local residents, and regulate activities in mining areas affected by unlawful operations.

Lawmakers who spoke in support of the bill described it as a necessary move to reduce crime in mining regions and promote responsible exploitation of mineral resources.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio commended the initiative, saying it would strengthen mining oversight, promote accountability, and increase national income once it becomes law.
