The Nigerian Senate resumed plenary on Tuesday after a 10-week recess, with Senate President Godswill Akpabio urging lawmakers to recommit themselves to accountability, discipline, and purposeful governance.

In his opening address, Akpabio emphasized the Senate’s duty to the Nigerian people, stating, “To the citizens of Nigeria, we hear you. You asked us not for excuses, but for results. We will remain accountable and responsive.” He warned that actions undermining the legislature could threaten the country’s democratic structures.

Describing governance as a “sacred duty of trust and not theatrics,” the Senate President called for competence over popularity, urging the selection of leaders “worthy of the people’s trust” rather than the loudest voices.

On national emergencies, Akpabio pledged swift Senate intervention in flood-affected areas, assuring victims that the 10th Senate would not relent in addressing the crisis. He also highlighted improvements in oil production and commended President Bola Tinubu’s administration for stabilizing state finances, noting that “Today, no state governor is borrowing to pay salaries,” while urging lawmakers to enforce fiscal discipline.

Tuesday’s plenary also marked the return of embattled Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan of Kogi Central after a six-month suspension. In a show of solidarity with Palestine, some senators attended the session dressed in Palestinian colours.

The Senate and House of Representatives adjourned for their annual legislative recess in July, a routine period allowing lawmakers to balance national duties with constituency responsibilities and personal engagements.
