State Chairmen of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) have thrown their weight behind the expulsion of the party’s National Chairman, Alhaji Shehu Gabam, and two other members of the National Working Committee (NWC) over alleged misconduct.

In a statement issued on Friday, the Chairman of the SDP State Chairmen Forum and Lagos State Chairman, Femi Olaniyi, described the expulsion as a welcome development and a victory for integrity within the party.

Olaniyi said, “The departure of Shehu Gabam at this crucial moment marks a victory for the righteous over evil. History will not overlook the years he spent as national chairman. Without reservation, Gabam has been a negative influence on the political development of the Social Democratic Party.”

He commended the party’s NWC for taking decisive action, noting that the move would help protect the SDP from “reckless behaviour and mischief.”

The development follows the NWC’s announcement on Thursday of the expulsion of Gabam, the National Youth Leader, Mr. Ogbonna Chukwuma Uchechukwu, and several others after months of investigation into allegations of misconduct and abuse of office.

Addressing journalists at the party’s national secretariat in Abuja, the National Publicity Secretary, Rufus Aiyenigba, said the decision was based on the adoption of the report of the Disciplinary Committee and a subsequent white paper that reviewed its findings and recommendations.

Those dismissed and expelled include Alhaji Shehu Musa Gabam (former National Chairman) and Mr. Ogbonna Chukwuma Uchechukwu (former National Youth Leader), while Mr. Clarkson Nnadi, former National Auditor, resigned voluntarily. Eight others — Adamu Abubakar Modibbo, Abubakar Dogara, Nuraddeen Bisalla, Solsuema Osaro, Ambo Ekpeyong, Eluwa Ifeanyi Henry, Humphrey Unwukaeze, and Judith Israel Shuaibu — were also expelled for alleged acts of disloyalty and unlawful entry into the party’s national secretariat on July 28, 2025.

It will be recalled that the NWC had earlier suspended Gabam on June 24 over alleged grave financial misconduct, embezzlement, and diversion of party funds, along with Nnadi and Uchechukwu.

As of press time, Gabam had yet to issue an official statement reacting to the state chairmen’s position or his expulsion from the party.
