A prominent figure within the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), Alhaji Buba Galadima, has dismissed the recent surge of defections to the Social Democratic Party (SDP), describing the SDP as simply a branch of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
During an interview with Arise Television on Tuesday, Galadima noted that it was not surprising for members of the NNPP to shift their allegiance to the SDP, suggesting that he views the SDP as a satellite entity of the APC.
He stated that these defections reflect the current political landscape, suggesting that the SDP functions primarily as an extension of the ruling party’s agenda.
He said, “The SDP that you talked about in your introduction is a branch of the APC. It was those APC people that moved to what you now called SDP. Nothing more. How many people from other parties have moved to the SDP? That is the question the people should ask. So, it is not out of place, you’re in Lagos. this is the character of Lagos to decimate opposition.”

Alhaji Buba Galadima’s remarks came in response to Malam Nasir El-Rufai’s recent call for opposition leaders to join the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in 2027, with the aim of challenging the dominance of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the upcoming presidential race.
El-Rufai, who defected from the APC to the SDP earlier in March, has been actively reaching out to leaders and members of other opposition parties.
He is encouraging them to join his new party, in a bid to create a formidable opposition force as the 2027 presidential election draws nearer.
