Former Imo State Governor, Achike Udenwa, has reiterated the need for the Southeast to have six states like other geo-political zones across Nigeria.
Speaking on Monday, the 27th of October, 2025, during an interview on Arise Television, Udenwa stressed that the imbalance has deprived the region of several national advantages.
His remarks follow renewed advocacy for an additional state in the Southeast to bring it at par with other zones.
According to reports, the Joint Committee of the Senate and House of Representatives on the Constitution has endorsed the creation of a new state in the Southeast to address long-standing concerns over marginalisation in Nigeria’s political structure.

“This is a very topical issue which has been on the burner for a very long time to give the Southeast six states. We know that every other zone in this country has six states, and the Northwest has seven.
“The Southeast has lost quite a lot in terms of benefits accorded to it, including the loss of three senatorial seats, which could have come to them, as well as in the sharing of federal revenue and other opportunities.
“Be that as it may, it would be nice if the current National Assembly could create the states we have been advocating for, which could have been done a very long time ago,” the ex-governor said.
