AUTHOR INTERVIEW: James Emmanuel Talks About His Journey, Inspiration, and the Making of Echoes of Ambition

In this exclusive media chat, fast-rising Nigerian author James Emmanuel opens up about his writing journey, the inspiration behind his highly acclaimed debut novel Echoes of Ambition, and his aspirations for the future. With a voice that bridges tradition and modernity, Emmanuel is steadily carving a niche for himself in the world of African literature.

A Passion Rooted in Literary Giants

For James Emmanuel, writing began as a childhood dream inspired by legendary Nigerian authors such as Chinua Achebe, Wole Soyinka, Cyprian Ekwensi, and Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. Their timeless works, he says, awakened his passion for storytelling and ignited his desire to make a difference through the written word.

“Their novels were irresistible,” Emmanuel recalls. “I began to dream of a time when I could tell compelling stories that inspire change. My desire to make a positive impact on both the young and the old is at the core of my writing.”

Crafting Plots That Speak to the Soul

When asked how he develops his plots and characters, Emmanuel reveals that every story he writes begins with a message or social issue he wishes to explore.

“The central theme drives the plot,” he explains. “As the story unfolds, I adjust and realign elements to ensure the idea remains the driving force. I also make extensive use of flashbacks to create suspense and keep readers engaged.”

Finding the Perfect Title

Choosing the right title for Echoes of Ambition was not an easy task. Emmanuel says he spent over a year debating between six options, including When the Gods Fall Silent and A Future Forged in Fire, before finally settling on Echoes of Ambition.

“It resonated more deeply with both students and adults,” he says. “It captures the essence of the story perfectly.”

A Novel Rich in Real-Life Experiences

Emmanuel draws inspiration from the world around him, often weaving real-life experiences into his stories.

“Experiences shared by people add authenticity and depth to my characters,” he notes. “That’s why this novel touches on religion, social vices, leadership, academic excellence, and how to survive life’s storms.”

The author describes the process of blending these complex themes into one story as both challenging and rewarding.

Overcoming the Challenges of Time and Perfection

Balancing a busy schedule with writing, Emmanuel admits, was one of his biggest hurdles.

“It took years of dedication,” he says. “There were times I didn’t know where to stop. My reviewers even asked for more chapters, but I knew where the story had to end.”
The decision paid off — the book’s success has sparked interest from filmmakers eager to adapt it into a feature film.

What’s Next for James Emmanuel?

While he remains tight-lipped about his next project, Emmanuel confirms that new ideas and characters are already developing.

“I prefer not to rush my work,” he explains. “I’m taking things one step at a time.”

A Unique Voice in African Storytelling

Asked what makes his writing stand out, Emmanuel says it lies in the emotional and intellectual balance of his narratives.

“My novels explore the complexities of human experience with sensitivity and nuance,” he says. “The synthesis of tradition and contemporary reality creates a timeless bridge that speaks to readers across generations.”

Dream Cast for the Big Screen

If Echoes of Ambition were to be adapted into a movie, Emmanuel already knows who would play his characters.

“Hilda Dokubo would perfectly embody Obidiya, while Pete Edochie would naturally portray Mazi Ogbodo,” he reveals. “Lateef Adedimeji, Stan Nze, Frederick Leonard, and Ibrahim Chatta would also be part of the cast. I admire how Chatta interprets native roles with captivating depth.”

On the Art of Good Writing and Handling Criticism

To Emmanuel, great writing is built on creativity, clarity, precision, and structure.

“Creativity gives originality; clarity ensures the message connects; and organization provides smooth flow,” he explains.

As for criticism, the young author embraces it as part of the creative process.

“I separate my emotions from critiques,” he says. “Feedback is a tool for growth, not discouragement.”

With his reflective storytelling and passion for social themes, James Emmanuel is undoubtedly a voice to watch in contemporary African literature. Echoes of Ambition may be his first major work, but it is already echoing far beyond the pages — signaling the rise of a new generation of Nigerian writers with something powerful to say.
