“IPOB Using Intersociety to Spread Fake Religious Statistics” — Bashir Ahmad

Former presidential aide, Bashir Ahmad, has accused the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) of promoting false narratives about religious and ethnic persecution in Nigeria through the International Society for Civil Liberties and Rule of Law (Intersociety).

Ahmad, who served as a media aide to the late President Muhammadu Buhari, made the allegation on Thursday in a post on X (formerly Twitter), describing Intersociety as a “propaganda platform” created by IPOB to manipulate public opinion.

“This IPOB dangerous propaganda platform, Intersociety, was founded in July 2008 in Onitsha, Anambra State, by Emeka Umeagbalasi, who currently serves as its Founder and Board Chair,” Ahmad wrote.

According to him, the organization has consistently released what he termed “fake statistics” on religious and ethnic persecution in the country. He alleged that Intersociety’s reports often contradict the findings of “independent monitors and credible data sources.”

“The organization has been actively reporting fake statistics on issues of religious and ethnic persecution in Nigeria, with casualty figures and narratives that always diverge from those of independent monitors and other credible data sources,” he added.

Ahmad also listed some of the key figures associated with Intersociety, naming Emeka Umeagbalasi as Founder and Board Chair; Chidinma Evangeline Udegbunam as Head of Campaigns and Publicity; Chinwe Umeche as Head of Democracy and Governance; and Obianuju Igbeli as Head of Human Rights.

He maintained that the group’s activities have contributed to heightening ethnic and religious tensions across the country, warning Nigerians to be wary of reports emanating from the organization.

Neither IPOB nor Intersociety has responded to the allegations as of the time of filing this report.
