Heavy Security Presence as Anambra Awaits Crucial Gov’ship Election

Awka and its neighbouring communities were on high alert on Friday, November 7, as security tightened ahead of the Anambra governorship election scheduled for Saturday, November 8.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reported an atmosphere of calm across the metropolis, despite the heavy presence of security operatives in strategic locations.

Vehicular movement around the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) headquarters in Awka was redirected through alternative routes, while checkpoints were mounted across key entry points.

Along the Nibo–Nise axis in Awka South Local Government Area, security agents were seen stationed at flashpoints to maintain order while allowing free movement of people and vehicles.

Mrs. Ifeoma Egbo, a trader at Eke Awka Market, told NAN that residents were uneasy due to the intensified security and the sound of air patrols.

“There are security men in uniforms in almost all the areas,” Egbo said.

She expressed concern that the show of force might discourage some voters, particularly the elderly, from turning out to vote.

Another trader, Mrs. Grace Anagor, said business activity had increased ahead of the poll, with more customers visiting the market than usual.

She, however, welcomed the heightened security presence, saying it reassured residents of the government’s readiness for a peaceful election.

She urged security personnel to “operate professionally and with a human face.”

NAN also reported that security agencies had deployed about 60,000 personnel to secure 5,720 polling units across the state.

INEC confirmed a 98.8 per cent collection rate of Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) ahead of the poll.
