The World Health Organization (WHO), in partnership with the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) UK, has provided modern equipment and learning tools to two nursing colleges in Enugu State, aimed at improving healthcare training and strengthening Nigeria’s health workforce.
The handover ceremony took place at the Enugu State Government House on Monday, 10 November 2025, where vehicles, generators, computers, laboratory tools, and electronic whiteboards were officially presented to the state government.
Speaking at the event, WHO Country Director and Head of Mission, Dr. Pavel Ursu, explained that the donation followed a thorough assessment of the colleges’ infrastructure under the WHO’s Equipment Support for Health Training Institutions (ESHTI) initiative.
State Governor Peter Mbah welcomed the donation, describing it as “fit for purpose” and essential for Enugu’s goal of training at least 3,000 healthcare professionals annually.

He also pledged to continue expanding hostel and classroom facilities to complement the new equipment.
Observers say the donation highlights the growing focus on building a well-trained, capable health workforce across Nigeria, particularly at the state level.
Partnerships between international agencies like WHO and FCDO and state governments, they note, are critical to ensuring quality healthcare education and services nationwide.
