The Federal Government has released nearly N50 billion directly to Primary Health Centres (PHCs) across Nigeria through the Basic Healthcare Provision Fund (BHCPF), the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Muhammad Pate, announced on Monday.
In addition, the government has disbursed over N20 billion for the rehabilitation and upgrade of 4,362 PHCs across the 19 northern states and the Federal Capital Territory under President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
Prof. Pate, in a post on his official X handle, said the BHCPF—funded from at least one per cent of the Federal Government’s Consolidated Revenue Fund along with donor contributions—was designed to strengthen Nigeria’s health system and provide a Basic Minimum Package of Health Services to citizens.
“I am pleased to inform you that from 2023 to date, nearly N50 billion has been disbursed directly to PHCs nationwide through the Fund, with verifiably impressive results,” Pate wrote, adding that the initiative has led to the modernisation of health facilities across all local government areas.

The minister also revealed progress in the health insurance drive, noting that enrollment is expected to surpass the 2024 record of 2.4 million Nigerians later this year.
According to him, more than 37 million visits to PHCs were recorded nationwide in the first quarter of 2025 alone, which he described as evidence of a “data-driven re-engineering of healthcare delivery for Africa’s largest population.”
The government, he added, is working to ensure that both northern and southern states benefit from the ongoing investments in healthcare infrastructure and services.
