Wike-Navy Clash: Nigerians Regardless of Status Must Respect Armed Forces — Lawan

Former Senate President Ahmed Lawan has urged Nigerians to show greater respect for the armed forces following the viral confrontation between FCT Minister Nyesom Wike and a naval officer in Abuja.

Lawan spoke on Thursday, November 13, after meeting President Bola Tinubu at the State House.

He praised the military’s sacrifices and said their role in protecting citizens must never be taken for granted.

“Let me commend our armed forces and other security agencies for doing so much for us, to protect our lives and property.

“They deserve our respect. They deserve our support at all times,” he said.

He added that the government is investing heavily in security and must now demand visible results.

Lawan stressed that Nigerians, regardless of position, must appreciate the military.

“But Nigerians, regardless of our status, must respect our armed forces. I have worked closely with them. They are doing a very good job,” he said.

His comments followed the altercation between Wike and a naval officer over a disputed land in Gaduwa District.

A viral video showed Wike questioning soldiers who reportedly stopped FCT officials from halting what authorities described as an unauthorised construction linked to a retired naval chief.

Wike later explained that he intervened after reports that senior FCT officials were assaulted.

“How can I sit as a minister when government officials are being attacked and beaten up, officials at the level of directors?” he asked.

He warned that no one should use military personnel for personal gain.

“You cannot be carrying a gun to intimidate anybody. I am not one of those they can intimidate,” he told the officer.

Wike added that the land had no record of lawful allocation.

Defence Minister Mohammed Badaru said any officer on “lawful duty” would be protected and confirmed that the Defence Headquarters is reviewing the incident to prevent similar disputes.
