Nigeria’s media landscape is in mourning following the death of Dan Agbese, a prominent Nigerian journalist and co-founder of NewsWatch magazine.
He passed away at the age of 81, family sources confirmed the passing of the veteran media titan on Monday morning in Lagos, according to reports from an online news platform owned by Mr. Shola Oshunkeye.
Agbese’s distinguished career spanned decades, marked by pivotal roles in various top media organizations. Prior to his tenure at NewsWatch, he served as the editor of The Nigeria Standard and the New Nigerian. He also held the position of general manager at Radio Benue. He was the editor-in-chief of the esteemed Newswatch magazine until April 2010.

The late Agbese was not only a highly regarded newspaper columnist but also a celebrated author. He held impressive academic credentials, earning degrees in mass communications and journalism from the University of Lagos and Columbia University, New York, respectively.
His contributions to literature and media theory include several acclaimed books, Nigeria Their Nigeria, Fellow Nigerians, The Reporter’s Companion, Style: A Guide to Good Writing, and The Columnist’s Companion: The Art and Craft of Column Writing.
