Shehu Sani Mourns Gen. Uba, Warns Against Terrorist Propaganda Tactics

Human rights advocate and former lawmaker Shehu Sani has condemned the use of violent propaganda by terrorist groups while paying tribute to Brigadier-General Musa Uba, whose death has sparked national grief and renewed questions about security lapses in Nigeria’s counterterrorism operations.

In a statement posted on his X account on Tuesday, Sani described the circulation of videos showing killings or kidnappings by insurgents as a deliberate attempt to project fear and intimidate the public. He called such actions “cowardly antics” meant to create illusions of power rather than reflect genuine strength.

“The killing of Brig. General M. Uba is a tragic loss to our country but a great sacrifice that will forever be appreciated,” he wrote, praising the late officer as “a brave and gallant soldier, an indomitable spirit who marched toward the fire in order to save his country.”

Sani emphasized that the nation must focus on celebrating the courage, patriotism, and sacrifice of its soldiers rather than amplifying the cruelty or cowardice of the attackers. He insisted that despite 15 years of ongoing conflict, terrorism “has never won and will never win.”

The activist called for a thorough military investigation into the circumstances surrounding General Uba’s death, urging authorities to examine any possible operational lapses that may have contributed to the loss of the general and other personnel.

“We must never glorify their crimes,” he cautioned. “The military must do everything to investigate the circumstances and possible lapses that led to the fall of Gen. Uba and others. May their souls rest in peace.”

General Uba’s killing has reignited national concern about the evolving tactics of insurgent groups and the dangers facing frontline troops, even as security agencies continue operations across Nigeria’s northeastern region.

Sani’s remarks add to growing calls for improved strategy, better protection for soldiers, and stronger public resilience against terrorist messaging.
