IPOB Lauds Governors Otti, Aliyu for ‘Historic’ Visit to Nnamdi Kanu

The Indigenous People of Biafra has applauded the governors of Abia and Sokoto states, Alex Otti and Ahmad Aliyu, for their unexpected visit to its detained leader, Nnamdi Kanu, describing the move as “historic,” “courageous,” and a signal of growing concern over his continued incarceration.

In a statement issued on Thursday, IPOB Lauds Governors Otti, Aliyu for ‘Historic’ Visit to Nnamdi Kanu spokesperson, Emma Powerful, said the organisation received the visit with “deep appreciation,” noting that it came at a time when Kanu’s detention and trial remain a source of tension and grief for many in the South-East.

Powerful reiterated IPOB’s view that Kanu’s capture in Kenya, subsequent extraordinary rendition, prolonged detention, trial, conviction, and eventual transfer to the Sokoto Correctional Centre amounted to a long-standing injustice that continued to provoke resentment among Ndigbo.

He alleged that the Federal Government had used security agencies for “false-flag operations” in the South-East to manufacture evidence of violence and terrorism against IPOB and its leader—claims the group insists must be subjected to an independent investigation.

“The kidnapping, extraordinary rendition, extended detention, unlawful trial, life imprisonment, and cruel transfer to Sokoto prison will not stand,” the statement said. “To Ndigbo and many aware Nigerians, Kanu remains a prisoner of conscience and a casualty of a tyrannical regime.”

Powerful argued that Kanu had committed no offence recognised by local or international law, insisting that his only “crime” was advocating for the rights of his people in a nation that had marginalised them for decades.

He added that relocating Kanu to Sokoto would not diminish the widespread support he enjoys. “Kanu is cherished by more than 90 per cent of Ndigbo and numerous well-meaning Nigerians and foreigners,” he said. “A destined individual will always encounter supporters wherever he is.”

While emphasising that IPOB remains committed to a non-violent campaign for Biafran self-determination, the group urged the Federal Government to protect Kanu’s life and welfare as the agitation for a UN-supervised referendum continues.

The group also extended appreciation to “well-meaning Nigerians, including residents of Sokoto,” who have shown solidarity by visiting the pro-Biafran leader.

“IPOB once more praises Governor Alex Otti and Governor Ahmad Aliyu for their visit. We remain hopeful that justice and reason will ultimately prevail,” the statement concluded.
